Getting into Digital Audio Storage and Playback

The storage and playback of digital audio is a very complex subject.

It may be as simple as dropping some songs on your iPod and listening to it with earbuds.  However, most of you want more than that.

For many, the convenience is the prime factor. Yet, the complexity of deciding what to do and how to do it is daunting, and the solution can be more irritating than the problem.

There are many ways to acquire, store, and play digital music.  Many people think there is little difference in the quality, but each step can introduce audible problems that degrade the music in some way.  Everything matters, but how much – and at what cost?

How should you store your music? Using what CD ripping method and hardware? Using which download sites and methods?  In which file format(s)? Onto what hardware?

How should you play back your music? Using what hardware? Using what server software?  What human interface hardware and software?

All these questions need to be answered, but the first ones are the most important for long-term quality of musical playback.  You must get a perfect rip or download if you are to have a chance of the best quality result.  You need to be aware of the problems that many common and accepted methods can introduce.  Only then can you decide how to set up your storage plan. You may need to stop what you are doing wrong now, start doing it right, and consider reacquiring many of your imperfect files.

Playback may involve portable devices, multiple stationary locations, audiophile quality HIFI equipment, and even multiple domiciles. How to manage all these for compatibility and convenience can be complex.

All this may be truly discouraging and make you want to play a CD or LP.

But, digital music is worth it.  It can greatly increase the use and enjoyment of the music you own, and make it much easier to explore new music.  It can also be higher quality than anything you have, even the best CD player or turntable.
